Gaza pullout: turning the tables

Posted Sunday, August 7th, 2005 at 11:19 pm

The recent terrorist attack committed by a Jewish Israeli military deserter, who went and gunned down four Arabs on a bus, was called ‘a bloodthirsty Jewish terrorist’ by Sharon himself.

I was shocked to hear this news. As far as I have come to understand about the conflict in Israeli with the Palestinians, all the past terrorist attacks by Palestians were the initiator of retalation strikes by the Israeli military. Perhaps, as a result of the uncountable terrorist attacks on [Jewish] Israelis, I have become numb to news stories about bus bombings. But this was different. This time, an Israeli did it first. Sharon’s choice of words undercuts how shameful this act of violence was.

I brought up the incident with one of my co-workers who is Palestian. He had a salient insight that really hit home with me. Abdallah told me something along the lines of, “Look, now Israelis are upset, having their own land taken from [the government], they too are comitting senseless acts of terrorism upon civilians whom they feel is causing their loss of the land.”

In other words, the Israelis that are being forced to move out of Gaza are now experiencing the same thing Palestians have been experiencing for decades!

I’m curious. When Israel took the land in Gaza in 1967 for Jewish settlements, was the settlers required to purchase protions for their own use? If they were simply given their plots then why should there be compensation for stolen land that they got for free? Now doubt in some round about way it will be the US taxpayers that flip the bill..But I agree with your friend. What goes around comes around..

They weren’t just “given plots”. It was somewhat like a sharecropping system, where land was given under the understanding that the land must be developed and made arable. From what I undertstand, explicit ownership of the land never was in the hands of those settling it in the first place.

The difference between the jewish terrorist and the palestinian terror is that the vast population of Israel was mortified and ashamed to hear that one of their own had committed such an act, and an investigation was launched to determine if there was a anything which could have been differently by the authorities to avoid it. On the other hand, when a palestinian commits an identical attrocity, there are celebrations in the streets, and the perp (and his family) become instant heros. They even recieve monetary compensation from the PA and various ‘charities’ as well.

Both sides have enough reasons to hate each other, the real question is - who is trying to overcome the violence, and who is encouraging it?
